about

For I found the mausoleum, and I found Her sarcophagus, for it could only have been hers. All of gold, it was, inches-thick and solid, and encrusted with the jewelry of a kingdom in eerie, Qabbalistic designs. The castle’s descent into the bog had disturbed it enough to dislodge the lid, from which rose a sensation. It was not an odour, and I could not see a dense black fume coiling upwards, but something emanated from that thin, dark aperture, and without possessing the language required to describe the sixth sense it stimulated, I must fall back on the five common to our race. Then, it did reek - of more than death and rot, but of corruption. And it was a coil of the blackest incense, blacker than oil smoke, that made a way through the sepulchral air under its own malignant volition, untouched by any stirring of the air. And then, I could taste its umbral flavour, not on my tongue but in my soul - if ever I have believed the soul to exist within the body, it was then. The sensation on my skin was one of oil, and thorns, and pressure. I felt compelled to flee, to abandon my reason and run, and this was more than an instinct, yet it was not quite physical. But I had to look, too - that, I believe, was a desire of my own curiosity and intellect, and - bless it - it proved the stronger provocation. With what strength, I do not know, but I removed the lid of the sarcophagus. Utterly absorbed with what met my eyes I did not hear it fall to the other side.
